"AI: The Whole Company, or Nothing"
Let's start with something uncomfortable. There is no such thing as "AI in engineering." Not really. If AI only lives in engineering, it's a tool. If it lives in the whole company, it's a strategy. There is no in-between. It's the whole company, or it's nothing. That's the talk today. Now, I know what some of you are thinking. "Our engineers already use AI. We're fine." And yes, they do. They get a speed boost. Code gets written faster, tickets close faster. But let's be honest: that's a dime. It's the cheapest gain in the whole stack. If that's where your AI story ends, you've automated typing. You haven't changed anything that matters. Here's the real question, and it's the one most companies skip: what happens when you stop automating yesterday's process, and start asking what the process would look like if AI did the work from the beginning? Not faster approvals. No approvals. Not faster reports. No reports, just decisions. That's a different design problem. Most organizations never even open that door, because it means redesigning the process, not decorating it. But there's something underneath all of this we don't talk about enough. An AI assistant is a good conversation partner. It never gets tired, never judges, always responds. But humans are herd animals. We evolved to think in groups, to check with each other, to move together. For years, our problem at work was multitasking: too many tabs, too many meetings. Now we have a new problem. Everything moves faster, and more of us are making calls alone, without the herd around to slow us down or catch our mistakes. And that matters, because every one of us has a limited number of genuinely good decisions in us each day. Call it three. Maybe four, on a good day. AI does not increase that number. It increases the speed at which we act on all our decisions, good and bad. So the real risk isn't that AI makes us slower or lazier. It's that it lets us make bad decisions faster, and in bigger batches, before anyone, including ourselves, notices. Which brings us back to where we started. AI: the whole company, or nothing.
